This question was not directed to me, but DSM makes a synthetic resveratrol called ResVida. It is 98-99% pure and a study was published showing that it appears to be safe, nontoxic, and nonmutagenic in animals:

1. Food Chem Toxicol. 2009 Sep;47(9):2170-82. Epub 2009 Jun 6.

Safety studies conducted on high-purity trans-resveratrol in experimental

animals. Williams LD, Burdock GA, Edwards JA, Beck M, Bausch J.

Burdock Group, Orlando, FL 32801, USA.

"trans-Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound found in a

variety of foods, but predominantly in grapes. Safety studies were conducted on

high-purity trans-resveratrol (Resvida), including skin and eye irritation,

dermal sensitization, subchronic and reproductive toxicity, genotoxicity, and

absorption, metabolism and excretion. Resvida was non-irritating to skin and eyes

and non-sensitizing. It was non-mutagenic in a bacterial reverse mutation assay

in Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli, but exhibited clastogenic

activity in a chromosomal aberration test in human lymphocytes. However, in an in

vivo bone marrow micronucleus test in rats, Resvida was non-genotoxic. In a

28-day study, Resvida caused no adverse effects in rats at 50, 150 and 500 mg/kg

bw/day. Similarly, in a 90-day study, Resvida did not cause any adverse effects

in rats at up to 700 mg/kg bw/day; the highest dose tested. Resvida did not

induce any adverse reproductive effects in an embryo-fetal toxicity study in rats

at a dose of 750 mg/kg bw/day. Also, in vitro and in vivo absorption, metabolism,

and excretion studies in Caco-2 cells, rat primary hepatocytes and male and

female rats (in vivo) show that Resvida is readily absorbed, metabolized and

excreted. These studies provide evidence that Resvida is well tolerated and

non-toxic."

Of course, mice are not people and long-term safety is still unknown. It appears that the study was conducted by a consulting firm at the request of the manufacturer. It doesn't mean the results are invalid, but just something to keep in mind.

Unknown, its extracted from P. Cuspidatum, probably with a non-toxic solvent. While there were (are) many brand names, there may only be a few that are worth using long term. I dont think any company is "ramping up" production right now as Resveratrol use may be on the decline due to the marketing of less than highest purity product that can cause side effects and, or additives that can produce sensitivity. People wont purchase or use something that gives them side effects, although that may not always be the case. Some people tolerate lower purity and emodin content well. As for the synth. Resveratrol, 2 companies have proposed maketing it, but its probably a long ways off from production. Are you using Resveratrol? What type and dose, length of time? Effects?

I mean product that is not extracted from PC or any plant matter. While they may be identical there may be a qualitative difference in systemic absorbtion and, perhaps, price. If youre currently taking the best available product for you, it may or may not make a difference. Having it as an option, to alternate, switch, or add, might enhance its effects. Its just my opinion and not advice.

When you say synthetic product do you mean resveratrol produced by yeast for instance (i.e. not from Polygonum Cuspidatum or some other plant source)? Wouldn't the chemical structures of the two be identical? Thanks for any help you can provide. DW
