Philadelphia. SCAM WATCH – GlaxoSmithKline issues a written warning to John Stogner and Larry Olson of Nature’s Source for issuance of a press release implying endorsement of Nature’s Source resveratrol by Dr. Christoph Westphal and Dr. David Sinclair.
AMGEN scientists publish data
AMGEN scientists publish data questioning whether resveratrol is a direct activator of SIRT1 enzyme activity. The paper is based on the observation that the activation by resveratrol is substrate specific, an observation made more than 5 years ago by Drs. Brian Kennedy and Matt Kaeberlein at Washington University.

Detroit, MI. John D. Dingell of the VA Medical Center publishes a paper in the journal Nutrition and Cancer on the synergistic effects of curcumin and resveratrol on xenografted colon cancer cells. They suspect the activity is due to attenuation of NF-kB activity.

Dallas, TX. Roberto Coppari’s lab reports in Endochrinology that administration of resveratrol to the brain of mice improves hypoerglycemia (pre-diabetes) in mice. They suggest that some of the effects of resveratrol are mediated via the hypothalamus in the central nervous system.

The Calorie-Restriction Experiment
New York. Jon Gertner writes in the NYT “The Calorie-Restriction Experiment. “There seems little doubt that calorie restriction can have significant effects on secondary aging. A recent spate of papers in some of the world’s leading medical journals demonstrate that in small studies, human subjects following such diets experience astounding drops in cardiovascular risk factors; a forthcoming review on cancer risks in animals with such diets, moreover, suggests a stark correlation — fewer calories mean fewer tumors.”
